I had to make a new install of Vista X64 after my old hard drive crashed. I also changed from a CRT to an LCD monitor.
After the main software installed and I was bringing up the desktop for the first time, I received the "oversize" error message from my monitor and the display blanked. I then rebooted into the "Safe Mode" and selected the low resolution option and succeeded in getting the destop to appear for about 15 seconds before the display blanked and gave me the "oversize" message again. I also tried to alter the display refresh rate to 60 and lower the resolution in the "Safe Mode" control panel, but "Safe Mode" would not let me alter the refresh rate.
I also called Princeton (monitor manufacturor) and they told me to hook up a CRT long enough to get the Vista system to come up and alter the refresh rate from the control panel.
I don't have a CRT on hand anymore, so I have to try and find one.
Anyone have any new ideas?
My configuration: Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 motherboard Athlon 64 3500 processor 2GB DDR 400 Nvidia FX 5500 8X AGP 256MB Princeton VL173 LCD monitor -- I''m Down the Tubes with the whales!

"Oversize Recommand Mode 1024 X 1280" Vista X64
rabuf: A possible cause for the error is using is using the "DVI" monitor cable instead of the standard analog monitor cable. I vaguely remember reading about this before the CPP was released. I’m using the analog cable on my KDS 19” display because I’m using a KVM switch.

VGA mode is for adjusting the video settings if it is available in your boot list.

My Princeton VL173 only has analog input and only has an analog cable. It works fine on XP Home. (I'm dual booting) -- I''m Down the Tubes with the whales!

rabuf: Follow John's advice about booting into VGA mode. The 1280x1024 resolution may be too high for the video card that you're using. The 1280x1024 resolution at 75hz works fine on my 4400x2, x64 system with an Asus n6600 video card and a KDS 19" LCD.
